Dead of cancer. Hingle was an outstanding character actor. Maybe not as versatile as a contemporary of his, Ned Beatty, but he was deadly with anything in his wheelhouse. My favorite was his role as "Bobo" in "The Grifters" where he was both charming and hugely menacing in a memorable scene with Angelica Huston--I've never thought of a sack of oranges in the same way since. His bio says though he was born in Denver, he went to high school in Texas and then enrolled at UT before serving on a destroyer in WWII. After the war, back to Austin where he majored in theater because there were a lot of girls there. That a boy, Pat.

I liked him as well.
Just read that he lived in Carolina Beach, NC when he died. I have spent a lot of time in/around Carolina Beach since I was a child - especially the last two summers. My mom grew up just a few miles up the road. It speaks volumes that he chose such a small and low-key place to live. Carolina Beach was traditionally known as a "white trash" beach town to outsiders, but was always a favorite of the locals.
Pat played Wyatt Earp's father in Andy Griffith episode #179.
I have always hated Aunt Bea. I would have prefered that the writers of the show would have had her killed off, the victim of a Crips drive by shooting in an increasingly gang infested Mayberry or just maybe shot by a jilted dyke lover of hers. Andy would have been away at an out of town transvestite convention in Raleigh and unable to render assistance. Barney would have been home, afflicted with an aggressive case of tropical sprue or simply playing with Lincoln Logs.
Aunt Bee wore the yellow ribbon for you, Taras.
I, too, loathed Aunt Bee, and moved to Texas to be further away from her memory. Alas, re-runs is everywhere!
glenn, you're an odd and mysterious man.
