Designated Marksman

Many of the designated marksmen carry the M-14 rifle.

I'd say these Marines are all in line for some important promotions and personal citations regardless of their race, color or creed.

Marine Makes Insurgents Pay the Price

....During the battle, the designated marksman single handedly thwarted a company-sized enemy RPG and machinegun ambush by reportedly killing 20 enemy fighters with his devastatingly accurate precision fire. He selflessly exposed himself time and again to intense enemy fire during a critical point in the eight-hour battle for Shewan in order to kill any enemy combatants who attempted to engage or maneuver on the Marines in the kill zone. What made his actions even more impressive was the fact that he didn’t miss any shots, despite the enemies’ rounds impacting within a foot of his fighting position.

“I was in my own little world,” the young corporal said. “I wasn’t even aware of a lot of the rounds impacting near my position, because I was concentrating so hard on making sure my rounds were on target.”

"That's good shooting soldier!"

Click on the photo for a nice close-up view of the venerable M14. It is basically an M1 Garand rifle that was modified to accept a detachable box magazine from below rather than a top loading clip.

It is "select-fire" for semiautomatic or full automatic. It climbs a great deal on full auto and it is not used in that mode today. Something to do with the balance of the rifle causes the problem.

Damn.

Given the political climate these days, I wouldn't be surprised to find that many in our great country would consider him a war criminal instead of a hero, and that some of those thankless dickheads would happily tell the world such, just after being handed some stupid little statue and thanking their fucking agent...

Worst of all is that such "awards" garner far more attention and public support than any medal this fine soldier should receive.

In other military news, the Navy is doing a trial run of bringing back the famous khaki dress uniforms, done away with by Elmo Zumwalt in his bid to fuck up the Navy as much as possible: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.navytimes.com/xml/news/2008/04/navy_khakiweartest_043008w/042808nt_uniform_800.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.navytimes.com/news/2008/04/navy_khakiweartest_043008w/&usg=__HVFqdHIPQjhOPDdoH6zxSN_bqfE=&h=536&w=800&sz=94&hl=en&start=3&sig2=iyLWQOnAsfPRbhVEwDrCXg&tbnid=bSznTFgl-74o-M:&tbnh=96&tbnw=143&ei=nYstSaWfGoL0MMHfvMsG&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnavy%2Btan%2Bdress%2Buniform%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

I like a man in uniform.
