http://assemblyman-eph.blogspot.com/2009/06/vintage-grocery-store-displays.html. Some random grocery store memories from my misspent youth:
1. Children being spanked in the grocery aisle. A common occurrence that wouldn't receive much of any attention--everyone, including other children, assumed it was justly deserved.
2. Milk sold in glass gallon containers with paper tops. More times than not, you would see glass all over the floor from a just dropped container.
3. Smoking. Everywhere. By most everyone.
4. Colored Easter chicks sold at the checkout. It was a hard life for them.
5. Turning in soda bottles for the return deposit. A considerable amount of summer hours were spent hunting and collecting them.

Same memories here, but #5 really made me chuckle. Was having the "you kids these days have it so easy" talk (commonly referred to as the "I used to walk 20 miles to school, in the snow, every day" talk) just a couple of days ago, and the only bit of wisdom that seemed to resonate w/ him was the part about our having to collect coke bottles (we called every carbonated beverage coke) when we wanted a candy bar, popsicle, or other such treat.
No, I didn't bother to add that after we found enough bottles we still had to walk (or ride our bikes) the mile or so down to McLemore's to trade for/buy said sugary snack. He'd never have believed it. Nor would any other kid in today's world.
The grocery store wasn't really happy to see us--I think it was just a lot of trouble for them to take on the bottles and give us the 3 cents for each.
We've become our dads. I'll probably be yelling at kids to "get off the damn grass" before long.
